Introduction
Students have read about different methods and techniques of studying. In this lesson, they will practice skimming and scanning a short passage to find answers to questions.

Lesson Description
Students will use skimming and scanning techniques explained in the unit to find answers to questions about the web site Sequoyah: a North Georgia Notable.

  1. Students will be able to transfer ideas and techniques from the unit reading.
  2. Students will be able to skim and scan a short biographical passage.
  3. Students will be able to find answers to specific questions about the reading.

  1. Sequoyah was born near Tuskeegee, Tennessee, in 1776. He lived until 1843.
  2. The name Sequoyah means "pig's foot."
  3. A farmer named Charles Hicks first showed Sequoyah how to write his name.
  4. Sequoyah called his alphabet "Talking Leaves."
  5. Before Sequoyah developed his alphabet, the Cherokee people could not read or write. Within just a few months of being introduced to Sequoyah's "Talking Leaves," thousands of Cherokee were able to do both. Sequoyah also used his alphabet to write an important argument concerning boundary lines. He took the paper to the courts and read it.
