Writer's Choice Grade 7

Unit 24: Study Skills

Overview

Research requires a lot of reading. How do you know which books are best for a research report? Check out the front and back matter. In the front pages of a book, you can find out how old the book is and read the table of contents. In the back of the book, the index and glossary will give you more clues about the book's contents.

Once you've checked out the front and back pages, you may want to do a quick skim or scan of the book to find out if it has the information you need. When you find the information you need, then you can read carefully.

Practicing good study habits is important and will help you be more efficient. One effective study method is the SQ3R method. It's really pretty simple: survey, question, read, record, and review. Follow those steps, and your study time will be more productive.

Good notes and outlines are also important study aids. Learn how to pick out and record important points while listening and reading. Use outlines to help you organize information before you start writing. Knowing how to interpret and create charts, diagrams, and tables will also help you in your research and in your writing.
