Chapter 20: Print Advertisements

A Matter of Ethics Online Action

Advertising? Or Journalism?
According to some broadcast industry analysts, the line between advertising and journalism is starting to blur. Not too long ago, news departments maintained strict borders around themselves, not allowing their work to be influenced by commerce in any way.
Today, it is not uncommon to see local news stories that, it can be argued, are little more than advertisements for events, products and services. Defenders of the practice say that running a news story on the opening of a new business, an upcoming community event, or a housecleaning service for tired parents is a legitimate way of bringing useful information to the audience. Detractors say that commercials should be commercials, and the news should be the news.
