The law generally views growth and expansion of corporations as a good thing, as long as it doesn’t restrict competition. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was created to administer federal securities law. Corporations can expand by buying new land, building new plants, expanding product lines, merging with another company, or by acquiring assets or stocks of another company. The federal government regulates this growth. When you study this chapter, you will understand how and why the government regulates corporate activities, including expansion and dissolution.
