The European Union
The European Union (EU) is a political and economic alliance of European countries that was established in 1993. Its members can use the same currency (the euro), trade goods more easily, and allow citizens to travel, work, and study in any member country. EU countries also share common security and foreign policies.

The EU evolved from a series of previous agreements starting as early as 1957 among European countries. The founding members of the EU had cooperated in these original treaties, but they were soon joined by other nations. As of 1 May 2004 , the European Union had 25 member states. Romania and Bulgaria are scheduled to join in 2007 , and other countries are seeking or awaiting membership.

Below is a table showing the dates when countries joined what eventually became the European Union.
