Chapter 28: Readiness for Marriage

Chapter Summaries with Key Terms and Academic Vocabulary

Chapter Summary

Section 28.1 Understand Attraction

Several theories explain why people are attracted to each other. The most common theory is homogamy. This says that people are attracted to those who are most like themselves. Others fall under the complementary needs and social exchange theories. Propinquity, ideal mate, and the right time are more theories. Filter theory combines other theories into one. It says that the theories act in a series of steps until a mate is selected. The theories are useful. However, they do not explain everything. They do not tell us how a relationship develops and a partner is chosen.

Section 28.2 Choose the Right Partner

There are many signs that show that people are ready for marriage. These include being older and being independent. Relationships are stronger when parents approve. They are better when the couple knows each other well. Partners should have a sense of responsibility. People with many friends and those who get along with siblings are apt to have good relationship skills. Warning signs in a relationship include physical, emotional, and substance abuse. Jealousy or constant arguments are other signs. It is important to have a realistic attitude about marriage.
