Chapter 7: Conflict Resolution

Chapter Summaries

Conflict is a part of everyday life. Some conflicts are settled easily; others may last indefinitely. Conflicts are caused by a variety of factors. What creates conflict for one person may not matter to someone else. People who are tolerant and can control their anger are better able to prevent conflict. Negotiation is one way to prevent a disagreement from escalating into a full-blown conflict.

When responding to conflict, think safety first. The conflict resolution process is a proven method for successfully resolving conflicts. When disagreeing parties are deadlocked, they may need mediation. Conflict resolution and mediation strategies don't work when dealing with bullies. Instead you should show confidence, ignore verbal abuse, stand up for yourself and others, and tell an adult if the bully becomes physical.
