Review Key Concepts
1. Conflict is a disagreement or fight between people of opposing points of view.

2. Controlling anger helps you think clearly, prevent conflicts from getting out of hand, and can also help you accomplish goals.

3. Negotiation is the act of bargaining with others. Successful negotiation is an invaluable tool for preventing full blown conflict. When both parties feel they have been heard and most of their needs have been met, they no longer feel the need to fight.

4. Sample answer: siblings might have an external conflict about sharing a room. One might have an internal conflict about how to spend his free time. External conflicts can be challenging to resolve because they involve another person.

5. You may find that people struggle with external conflict more often because they interact with many different people on any given day.

Section 7.2

Review Key Concepts
1. Conflicts that escalate can become destructive or unsafe to all involved. Such conflicts may cause legal consequences, the loss of friends, or the loss of your family’s trust.

2. A mediator helps find a solution that is agreeable to everyone. The mediator questions all parties and answers questions calmly and fairly to clearly define the problem. He or she will not make decisions, but helps others find their own solutions.

3. Bullies are not open to conflict resolution because the conflict is often within themselves. Bullies need help dealing with their own insecurity, jealousy, anger, and unhappiness.

4. Answers will vary, but you should describe the conflict and solution in detail and analyze the solution.

5. You may mention that mediators should be patient, unbiased, thoughtful, logical, and helpful and have excellent listening skills.
