Chapter 16: Using Math in Sales

QR Code—A Hardlink
A QR Code is a "quick response" barcode designed in a two-dimensional matrix in black and white that can be read by scanning it with a scanning device or a mobile phone equipped with scanning capabilities. The QR Codes contain text with information pertinent to a product or a hard link to direct the user to a product's Web site. It is a great marketing tool. Napkins in fast food restaurants may have a QR code that can be scanned with nutritional information about menu selections. Retailers can include QR codes on receipts and directly on products like eye glasses. Since the QR Code can store a lot of information, all the details of a product can be part of the code. When products are sold the checkout person can scan the product's QR Code to provide management with detailed sales reports. For example when a customer buys a pair of glasses, all the details about the customer's prescription, the frame, color, manufacturer, and price can be retrieved and used to analyze eye glass sales.

Innovate and Create
How might QR Codes be used by physicians, supermarkets, clothing stores, appliance retailers, and movie theaters? Have students brainstorm all the data that could be generated from QR Codes for sales management purposes. Have students research the similarities and differences between QR Codes and High Capacity Color Barcodes (HCCB), such as Microsoft Tags?
