Chapter Summary

Section 6.1 The Communication Process

Communication is the two-step process of sending and receiving messages. It is the basis for all relationships. Using it ethically and keeping confidentiality builds trust between people. The two main channels are verbal and nonverbal. When everyone participates, the timing is good, and the use of space is considered, communication is better.

Section 6.2 Skillful Communication

Skillful communication means learning specific skills. Passive and active listening skills are used to understand messages received. I-messages, feedback, and being assertive can help spoken communication. Barriers to communication can be overcome. Common barriers include silence, mixed messages, and mind reading.
