Chapter Summaries with Key Terms and Academic Vocabulary

Chapter Summary

Section 24.1 Be a Good Consumer

Skillful consumers have traits that help them make the most of their money. They know that a quality product is well made, works right, and will last. They can evaluate whether a price is fair. They comparison shop. Good consumers avoid impulse buying. Advertising can be direct or indirect. Direct advertising aims directly at your values. Indirect advertising is not as obvious. Consumers can use information from advertisements. They should use a critical eye to question and evaluate ad claims.

Section 24.2 Consumer Rights and Responsibilities

Consumers have rights that are set by federal and state laws. They also have responsibilities. Consumer complaints may be best done in person. The consumer should state the problem. He or she should explain the outcome wanted. Sometimes a letter is more effective. Billing problems should be settled quickly to prevent incorrect credit reports. Government agencies serve as resources for consumers. In addition, business groups are also resources.
